The pickle fortune heir was dying and had been for several months; that much everyone who saw him knew. Spending his fortune as his life wasted away was one of the last joys left him, and he was taking full advantage of it. I hurried toward the booth when I first spotted Curtis slumped over. A minute before, a stranger had stumbled into his booth, said his excuses, and then left the diner. There were a handful of folks in the diner, and I was thrilled to see Laney Jones enjoying some bacon and eggs before she started her shift as a pediatrics nurse.
Her smile faded when she saw Curtis.
As she checked for a pulse, I turned to everyone else at the diner. There were a few nods from my customers, and everyone did as I asked as they sat back in their chairs. My mother came out of the kitchen to see what was going on, and Ellen Hightower, our breakfast and lunch server, pulled her off to one side and quickly caught her up to date.
I was glad that she did, because I had my hands full at the moment. I looked around at my seated customers and realized that their breakfast meals were all but forgotten as they watched Laney work on Curtis. An ambulance drove up with lights flashing and siren wailing, and as they rushed into the diner, I saw Jeffrey close on their heels.
I had to stop him before he got to his boss. Tears were tracking down his cheeks as he spoke. Amazon Renewed Refurbished products with a warranty. I look forward to another book in this series to see if the characters all flesh out and the plots deepen.
